How to use Remove Background
- Drop one or more photos (the AI model downloads once, 44 MB for Fast, then it’s cached)
- Check the cut-out; use Erase or Keep (restore) to paint over areas, and drag the Before/After slider to compare
- Pick a background (transparent, color, image or blurred), then click Remove background and download
About this tool
Background removal runs open-source AI models in your browser with ONNX Runtime Web. Fast (the default) uses U²-Net (Apache-2.0): a 44 MB download that works on any modern phone or computer. High quality uses BiRefNet-lite (MIT): a 69 MB download that analyzes the photo at 1024 pixels for cleaner hair, fur and fine edges, and needs a browser with WebGPU (recent Chrome or Edge on desktop). Both models are served from this site in 8-bit compressed form and kept in your browser’s cache, so they download only once. Your photo is never uploaded.
The brush works on the mask. Erase removes more background, for example a second person or an object next to your subject, and Keep paints parts of the photo back in, so you can remove only some of the background. Use Undo/Redo (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y), zoom in for fine edges, and set Feather to soften the outline or Hard edge for crisp product cut-outs. Export a transparent PNG or WebP, or JPG with a solid color.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free and private?
Yes. The AI runs in your browser, so photos never leave your device. There are no credits, watermarks or sign-ups.
Why is the first run slow?
The model downloads once (44 MB for Fast, 69 MB for High quality) and is then cached by your browser. After that, Fast takes a second or two per photo, and High quality a few seconds on a GPU.
Can I remove only part of the background?
Yes. After the automatic cut-out, paint with Keep to bring areas back, or Erase to remove more.
Which format keeps transparency?
PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so the background is filled with your chosen color (white by default).
Fast or High quality?
Start with Fast; it works on every device. If edges around hair, fur or fine details look rough, switch to High quality (needs WebGPU, in recent Chrome or Edge) or fix them with the brush.
Does it work for products and pets?
Yes, it works on people, animals, products, cars and most objects with a clear main subject. Busy scenes with no obvious subject may need brush touch-ups.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertBrightly processes files with JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is sent over the network, and the files disappear when you close the tab. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
