How to use Blur Background
- Drop your photos (the AI model downloads once, then it’s cached)
- Set the blur amount; paint with Keep (restore) to keep more of the photo sharp, or Erase to blur more
- Click Blur background and download
About this tool
The same on-device AI models as Remove Background (Fast: U²-Net, Apache-2.0, 44 MB; High quality: BiRefNet-lite, MIT, 69 MB, needs WebGPU) separate the subject from the scene. The background is then blurred with a smooth Gaussian blur and the sharp subject is placed back on top, similar to portrait mode on phones. Use the brush to fix edges: Keep paints sharpness back (for example a pet next to a person), and Erase marks more areas to blur. Feather softens the transition.
Your photos are processed on this device and never uploaded. Only the AI model is downloaded, once, from this site.
Frequently asked questions
How strong can the blur be?
From a gentle softening to a heavy blur. 40–60% looks most like a real camera lens.
Can I keep two people sharp?
Yes. If the AI picks only one, paint over the other with Keep.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
Fast or High quality?
Fast works everywhere and is fine for most photos. High quality gives cleaner edges around hair and fur but needs WebGPU (recent Chrome or Edge).
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertBrightly processes files with JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is sent over the network, and the files disappear when you close the tab. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
